Welcome Elm City Enthusiasts!
Elm City is a quiet little town, established in 1873, in eastern North Carolina. The current population is just over 1200 people. This little town has an elementary and middle school, a library, a couple of gas stations, a Piggly Wiggly, a hardware store, a couple of parks, a historical cemetery, a number of churches, a post office, a rotary club, an American Legion, a thrift store, a fire and EMS station, an Aggie's and a small southern restaurant called Oh My Lard!
There are a number of other businesses as well. There is a paved sidewalk that circles the center of town and provides a 2 mile walk for those who like to exercise. A train rambles through this sleepy town several times a day. There's one stop light and one caution light. Every year Elm City holds a Fall Festival in October and a Christmas parade in December. This little town has been around for 150 years and has quite a rich history. Quite some years ago it even had a bowling alley, a record label, general stores, and a pharmacy. The pharmacy closed sometime in the last 10 years, but the scooped ice cream and soda floats were still going strong up until it closed. A forgotten blue's man named John Henry “Guitar Shorty” Fortescue lived and played here in Elm City. Elm City has seen better days as far as commerce is concerned, but with the right vision, it is primed for redevelopment. I love this town and I raised my children here.
